Sphinxes are mythological creatures with the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a human head. In classical mythology, they are often associated with riddles. In the story of Oedipus, a sphinx tormented the city of Thebes by asking those citizens that dared to cross her path a riddle, and when they failed to solve that riddle, she killed and ate them.
